Air Disruption in Europe and Asia: US-Iran Tensions Threaten Flights Over the Bahrain Gulf FCO → LHR · 2 MIN

What is happening and why

In recent days, geopolitical tensions have arisen between the United States and Iran with unverified claims of an attack near Bahrain, a crucial hub for air routes between Europe and Asia. Such events can lead to temporary airspace closures in the Persian Gulf, resulting in flight diversions or cancellations.

The estimated impact level is 3 out of 5, so moderate but widespread disruption is expected on intercontinental routes crossing this region.

Airports and flights at risk

Although no specific airports have been announced as directly affected, the most impacted routes are those from European airports such as Fiumicino (FCO) and London Heathrow (LHR) heading towards Asian hubs passing near the Bahrain Gulf.

Low-cost and traditional carriers operating these routes, such as Ryanair (FR) and easyJet (U2), may have to reschedule flights, causing delays and cancellations.

Passenger rights under EU261

If your flight departed from an EU airport or from a non-EU airport but operated by an EU carrier, you may be protected under the European Regulation EU261/2004.

In case of cancellations or delays over 3 hours caused by extraordinary events (such as geopolitical tensions), carriers are not obligated to pay financial compensation but must still provide assistance, such as:

  • Meals and refreshments proportional to the waiting time
  • Two free phone calls or email access
  • Hotel accommodation if necessary
  • Transport between the airport and the accommodation

Practical tips for travelers

  • Check your flight status: visit the airline’s page or use our dedicated service to check your flight.
  • Arrive at the airport early: there may be additional security checks or gate changes.
  • Prepare a plan B: consider alternative routes, either via other European airports such as Milan Malpensa or Paris Charles de Gaulle, or direct flights to Asian destinations avoiding the Gulf.
  • Stay in contact with the airline: ask about possible refunds or rebooking.
  • Documents and clothing: keep your documents handy and pack a change of clothes in case of long delays.
