What is happening and why
In recent days, hundreds of passengers have found themselves stranded at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of the busiest hubs in Europe, due to a series of delays and cancellations affecting several airlines. EasyJet, KLM, German Airways, and British Airways are among the carriers most affected. In total, there are 407 delays and 26 cancellations impacting flights to or from major international hubs such as London, Rome, Lisbon, Mexico City, and Los Angeles.
The main cause of these disruptions is attributed to operational issues combined with logistical difficulties and possible staffing problems. The impact level is rated 3 out of 5, indicating a significant but manageable situation.
Which flights and airports are at risk?
The airports involved in the disruption include:
- Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS)
- Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci (FCO)
- Los Angeles International (LAX)
- Lisbon Humberto Delgado (LIS)
- Mexico City Benito Juárez (MEX)
Flights operated by easyJet (FR), KLM (KL), German Airways (4D), and British Airways (BA) are more susceptible to delays and cancellations. If your journey includes a stopover or departure from one of these airports with one of these airlines, we recommend carefully monitoring the situation.
Passenger rights under EU261
If your flight is canceled or significantly delayed within the European Union or on flights operated by European carriers, Regulation EU 261/2004 applies and guarantees several rights:
- Refund or re-routing: the right to choose between a ticket refund or boarding an alternative comparable flight.
- Assistance: meals, drinks, free communications, and if necessary, hotel accommodation.
- Financial compensation: in case of cancellations or extended delays over 3 hours, passengers may be entitled to compensation ranging from 250 to 600 euros, depending on the route.
Please note that compensation may not be guaranteed if the cause of the delay or cancellation is due to extraordinary circumstances, such as extreme weather conditions or security issues.
Practical tips for travelers
If your flight is affected by this situation, here are some suggestions:
- Confirm your flight status: Regularly check updates on the airline’s website or through official apps.
- Arrive at the airport well in advance: Prepare for longer times at security and check-in desks.
- Request assistance at the airport: If your flight is canceled or delayed, approach the airline counters or customer service for information about re-routing and services.
- Consider alternative options: If possible, look for alternative flights or different connections to reach your destination.
- Document everything: Keep receipts, boarding passes, and communications for any refund or compensation claims.
Also, keep an eye on changes to regulations and travel conditions, especially in a period of significant disruption like this.
