Air Baltic cancelled flight refund: your rights and how to claim
Air Baltic is the flag carrier of Latvia. If your flight was cancelled, the data is encouraging: according to our figures, Air Baltic has a 0.0% cancellation rate, well below the industry average of roughly 1.6%. It is also one of the most punctual airlines we track, with an average delay of just 14 minutes and 75% of flights on time. Cancellations are therefore rare, but if one happens you have clear rights.
Refund and compensation: two distinct rights
- Ticket refund: the return of the price you paid for the cancelled flight. Owed when you give up the trip or decline rebooking.
- EU261 compensation: an additional fixed amount set by European law, owed when the cancellation is the airline’s fault and was notified less than 14 days before departure. Amounts:
- €250 for routes up to 1,500 km
- €400 for routes between 1,500 and 3,500 km
- €600 for routes over 3,500 km
Compensation is not owed in cases of extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline’s control (extreme weather, ATC strikes, force majeure).
How to get a refund from Air Baltic
- Log in to your account or the “Manage my booking” system on the Air Baltic website using your booking reference.
- If your flight is cancelled, choose between a refund, rebooking on another flight, or a voucher. For cash, explicitly select the refund to your original payment method.
- Keep cancellation emails, boarding passes and receipts for any assistance expenses.
- For EU261 compensation, send a dedicated claim with the flight number, date and reason. If the airline rejects a claim you believe is valid, you can escalate to the national civil aviation authority.
When EU261 applies
Air Baltic is a Latvian carrier, and therefore an EU airline. EU261 applies to all flights departing from an EU airport and to all Air Baltic flights arriving at an EU airport.
