What is Happening
On August 14, 2026, a drone was shot down by NATO forces in the sky over Latvia, in a security operation that had immediate repercussions on air traffic in the region. Due to the drone intrusion and the ensuing security situation, Finland has temporarily imposed restrictions on its airspace, limiting commercial flights on certain routes.
This measure was taken as a precaution to protect the safety of aircraft and passengers in transit, amid growing geopolitical tension in the Baltic region.
Which Flights and Airports Are at Risk
The air traffic restrictions in Finland mainly affect flights crossing Finnish airspace to international and regional destinations. Among the airports most impacted are:
- Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL)
Although no blocks on landing or takeoff have been reported at major Baltic airports such as Riga or Tallinn at this time, flights using routes that pass over Finland or Latvia may experience diversions or cancellations.
Passengers’ Rights under EU261
According to the European Regulation EU261/2004, passengers affected by cancellations or long delays have specific rights:
- Assistance: meals and refreshments proportional to the waiting time, two telephone calls or access to the internet.
- Refund or Re-routing: in case of cancellation or delay over 5 hours, passengers can request a refund of the ticket or rerouting on alternative flights.
- Compensation: in case of cancellations or delays over 3 hours, except for force majeure causes. However, restrictions arising from security reasons and force majeure, like the current situation, generally exclude the right to compensation.
